Can I become a high school government teacher with a Political Science degree?
I'm in the Navy right now and am about to start work on a political science degree. My ultimate goal is to become a government teacher in either Florida or Virginia. The problem is that without a degree in education, I know that I'll need some sort of alternative certification. I went to the Virginia Dept of Education website and read the forms, but it's a little confusing. I guess the question is:
What are the required steps between coming out of college with the PoliSci degree and getting into the classroom teaching? Is it even possible?
Thanks so much for the information...
2 AnswersTeaching1 decade agoWhat do I need to do to teach government in high school?
I have recently decided, after much deliberation (and about 8 years behind the curve) that I would like become a teacher. Ideally, I would like to teach American Government, although I'm open to the idea of teaching foreign language (I have an associates in Russian language and culture). If there are any teachers or administrators out there who could point me in the right direction (what degrees would be required, etc) I'd really appreciate it. I'm currently serving in the Navy, and have three years to go on that, so I'll be trying to earn the majority of the required credits while still on active duty. Thanks very much for the help...

1 AnswerHoroscopes1 decade agoDoesn't the 13th Amendment ban military enlistment?
Amendment XIII to the U.S. Constitution states clearly that involuntary servitude may not exist in the United States:
"Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime where of the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction."
It is also clearly stated in military law that no provision of the laws may violate the US Constitution. In addition, even if someone in a military command structure were to attempt to pass a regulation that would violate the Constitution, the action itself would be illegal because:
1 - No government official is above the Constitution, and therefore no military or civilian officer can pass a provision which supercedes its authority.
2 - All government officers (including military officers and enlisted personnel) swear or affirm an oath to protect the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic. In doing so, they are agreeing not to violate it. Passing a provision against it would therefore be a violation of their oath.
With these two facts (that involuntary servitude is illegal and that military law cannot violate the constitution) evident, is it not also evident that military enlistment (that is, enlistment for a set period of time) is unconstitutional?
You might try and argue that since it is voluntary at its onset, it doesn't violate the Thirteenth Amendment, but that argument doesn't hold up to a reasonable challenge.
Say, for example, I were to hire a butler, and sign a contract for his services for a period of 5 years. A year into our contract, however, he decided to quit. I would have no legal recourse to force him to continue to serve me, because it would constitute involuntary servitude. I could sue him for monetary damages, breech, etc., but I could not MAKE HIM continue to serve me.
While military enlistment is voluntary at its onset, an enlisted person cannot escape his servitude before his enlistment is up without facing administrative or criminal penalty. In light of this, the illusion of voluntary service evaporates, because it is entirely possible for a person who no longer voluntarily serves (let's say, 3 years into a 5 year enlistment) to be forced to continue to serve.
Remember, you cannot legally sell yourself into bondage under the Thirteenth Amendment.
So I ask: how does enlistment (or commission for a mandatory period) NOT violate the law?
9 AnswersMilitary1 decade agoFree online "military" rank?
Does anybody know if there's a place online where I can get a free pseudo-military style rank, in the same vein as becoming an "ordained minister" for free, or becoming a "black belt" in some fake internet martial art? I'm actually in the military, so it's not like I'm trying to use it to con anyone or anything...I just think titles are cool, and I can't use my actual rank for the purposes of goofing off. And yes, I know I could just say "oh, I'm a Commadore" myself, but that's not as good as someone else saying it for me...
2 AnswersOther - Society & Culture1 decade agoWill my ACD be ok for one night in the garage if it's 25 degrees outside?
We are having to go away for one night, and it isn't possible for us to take our Australian Cattle Dog with us. We were going to put him in the garage with his blanket and plenty of food and water. It will be about 25 degrees tonight, and we are wondering if he'll be ok. Will he freeze to death? Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Hey...I've got a uniform inspection on Monday (Winter Working Blues), and wanted to know if I could wear my garrison cover (because it's optional), or if I had to wear the dixie cup. Believe it or not, I've never been inspected in working blues the whole time I've been in (just about 2 years).
2 AnswersMilitary1 decade agoWhat do ghosts do all day?
I was just watching "A Haunting" on Discovery, and started wondering: what do ghosts do all the time, when they're not freaking people out? I mean, if they're around to scare the crap out of people, then they're around all the time...what else do they do...what is their typical routine? This is meant as a somewhat serious question...like, if anyone on here is an *expert* on ghosts, what's the going consensus?
Thanks.
