  • What does "around the horn" mean and what is its origin?

I assume the term means to throw the baseball from base to base to base. But where does it originate from? Also, after a strikeout, why do catchers throw the baseball around the horn like that? Is it just to keep the infielders awake or is there a more technical reason?

  • Can an amateur play in a non-open tennis tournament?

Technically, any amateur (ie., non-pro player) can play in the Open tennis tournaments, but what about the non-Open ones? If he or she were talented enough, could he/she be given a special exemption to play in an event usually reserved for professionals? Just wondering...

For instance, could a female college tennis player be allowed to enter, say, the East Bank Classic or Rogers Cup this summer?

  • Are wooden rackets used or even allowed anymore on any level of tennis?

I used to have a wooden racket, and I was just wondering what happened to all of them in amateur or pro level tennis?

  • Who do you think "juices up" on the women's side?

I was just wondering, because some of the women (*cough* williams sisters *cough cough*) seem unnaturally large to me. Plus, it seemed strange to me that Justine Henin would retire when she was still doing well. Could it have been possible that she failed some drug test somewhere and decided to retire to preserve her legacy? Sorry if I sound pessimistic, but I'm starting not to trust any sports star nowadays...

  • Why no amateurs in Open tournaments?

Technically, aren't amateurs allowed to play in Open tournaments like the Grand Slams? How come we don't see any? Are there any special qualifying measures, or could a nobody like me just show up and say, "Hi! I'm here to play! Lemme in!"
