Has humanity's collective eyesight gotten worse in modern times?

It seems that a large percentage of the population wears glasses/corrective lenses. Poor eyesight must have been a serious disadvantage to survival in the past (even a couple hundred years ago for the lower classes). So has our collective eyesight gotten worse, or were our ancestors with poor eyesight either barely scraping by or getting weeded out?
