First, be sure of what it is you'll be doing. Do you have experience in it? Is there a success rate for that type of business? What kinds of costs are associated with that type of business? What kinds of overhead are needed? So on & so forth.
Try reading up on the subject -- check out Amazon, your local bookstore or library. Some keywords to keep in mind: small business, home business, start-ups, etc.
Also, check out the sources box -- I put some links in there that could help you start on your way.
Do you have a name in mind for your business? Prior to investing your time, money & effort into a name, it is strongly advised that comprehensive research be conducted to ensure that the name you're interested in is truly available.
This entails searching the pending & registered Federal and State trademark files as well as the US National Common-Law files. Then, if clear, you can decide if you would like to file for a Federal or a State trademark.
Research is needed to make sure your trade name is legally available, before opening, before expansion, before incorporation or before designing your logo. Similarities in sound, appearance and meaning affect you too!
There are 16+ million trade names in use in the United States. Similar names matter, if close in sound, appearance or meaning. Similar names in related classes, distribution channels and customer matter too. You are affected by Common Law use (14 million), State Trademarks (500,000) and Federal Trademarks (2 million).

Finding a business online!
== After 2 years on Internet, trying to find the best and scamfree Business opportunities online, i nearly gave up.There is so much scams out there,it can get you in the "Giving up mode"easily. I have use a lot of time searching for real companies with real products, checking the companies for support, real address, etc,it is a good rule to follow up on that issue.Make sure there is a support area, good products, well design website, phone number and e-mail address, so it is possible to reach them if any problems. How much do they charge you to start a business (relationship) with you?? I think it is possible to Start a Business on internet for FREE!And there is many companies offering exactly that. So, i have found some companies who offer you affiliate membership and give you the opportunirties to market their products and you will get paid commission for all the products sold from your website. It is free to start up and you only have to start promoting their products. This is the business i prefered. No investment,no products who has to been delivered, the companies take care of all that for you,Great..and even support for your customer, ordering products from your website. But the best way to find companies like that, is to sign up for companies like Linkshare,ClixGalore,CommissionJunction, they make sure you get the commision and let you know if there is any problem. You will get all the promotion, marketing material from them, and they will give you a site to check commision, click rates etc. When you choose affiliate programs like the one i mention above, you can not faile, because there is no investment to do and if there is any problem with some or any of the companies you are promoting ,the main company, like Linkshare will let you know .. Start a secure and scamfree business on line today! == http://business-opportunity-online.info Business Opportunities at Home.
