EXACTLY how many types of football are there?

Yahoo! Answers seems to have a football category for many countries. I thought there were only two types: American football and football/soccer. So EXACTLY how many types of football are there? Is it just that these soccer ones have slightly different rules?

OK, you have the soccer ones, which most countries call football. The USA, as you know has NFL. Australia has soccer, rugby league, rugby union, and Austalian Rules football. Ireland has a Gaelic football. The Irish and Australians play an international series which is a hybrid of Gaelic and Australian football. England has soccer, rugby league and rugby union.

Football is football wherever you are. It's just a variation on the rules. The game of rugby is actually called Rugby Football in the purest sense of the word and came from a game of football when the person picked up the ball and ran with it. The rest is history. The roots of football go back into the old medieval European Villages when a competion would be between two neighbouring villages, literally everyone got in on the game. There were no rules and it wasn't uncommon for people to get killed. Picking it up etc etc was all part of the game. The goals would be at the entrances to the opposing village. I have no knowledge of this but I'm sure the basics of it could be traced into the ancient civilisations. So not really anything but a variation on a theme. Hope that helps

American Football - NFL, National Football League football.

Canadian Football - CFL. Plays by slightly different rules than NFL. 3 downs instead of 4, the field is 110 yards long instead of 100, the end zone is 20 yars deep instead of 10.

Australian football - A more physical version of Rugby, not really football.

As for the soccer categories, each one deals with a different geographical area. Different continents and countries have their own soccer (football) leagues, and there are different categories because, for example, people interested in South American soccer might have no interest in European soccer, but the game itself is the same.

Don't forget, within American football there are variations. The NFL, AFL, NCAA, and high schools all play variations of the same game. In some areas small schools play 6 man football. There is also touch football and flag football.
