you can tell your a ford driver? do you know were the hood is ?
if so then open the hood or do you need to put a question on the web, ok step 2 from the rad follow the hose pipe at the top to the engine block and take the thermostat housing off and then you will see the old one in the block spring down, are you still with us so far then the answer to your question is in front of you , just so you kown put the spring end down in the block, god you ford driver's

most the time the water neck will not allow the thermostat to be installed backward. the spring and guts of the thermostat have to be heated to open the thermostat. So long side into the intake manifold gasket and water outlet on top. fill the engine completely with coolant mixture, turn on the heater. Start the engine leave the radatior cap off idle the engine long enough for the hose on the water outlet to get hot and water to circulate. If there is a clogged radatior the engine will heat up and boil over so be careful SCALDING HAZZARD!
