In the Godfather III, the newly elected Pope is murdered. Did that happen in real life?

If it did, it was kept a really big secret!!

But seriously, the Pope before John Paul was in office for such a brief period that there were some rumors that maybe he was killed off. Treachery in the Holy City is not new; it's been going on since Peter. But there is no hard evidence to support the rumor that he was murdered. It was just another movie plot..

Peace.

Yes.
In fact a great many of them were during ancient times. A total of 15 were murdered outright or were believed to have been killed.
In modern times, no pope has been murdered but was attempted with Pope John Paul. Thus the invention of the Pope Mobile.

I am sure a Pope has been murdered at some time in history, probably more than one... But no, all of the Godfather movies are fiction.

Fiction. Fiction. Fiction.

I think if a Pope was actually murdered by a Wise Guy, it would
have been on "The Sopranos" wouldn't it ?
