I would like to invite a filmmaker from Cuba to submit a film for a festival. What are the laws?

Is it possible to get in trouble communicating with the filmmaker? I feel paranoid for asking, but I want to make sure.

I know the second answer isn't true. Cuban films have had US distribution before, but I want to make sure it's done within terms of the law.

Go to the US State Dep't web site for restrictions on doing business with Cuban entities. There are numerous exemptions for cultural exchanges. A long as you are not paying for distribution rights you should have no problems, & even if you are you are probably ok

If you live in the USA, you are asking for trouble and you are not going to get his film into any US film festival...
You should be paranoid...

No, he can travel to the US, but not directly from Cuba. He would have to land in Canada, or another country first.
