You need to use a ceramic drill bit. Sometimes called a diamond drill bit. Use water as a coolant while drilling. Avoid the hammer drill.

Make a 2" mark on all 4 side of container full to mark with water
then use a 12" or longer 7/16 Thur 1/2" drill bet FOR CEMENT drill your holes.
you can also you masking tape, cover the site
(over tape pass site) inside & out you can use sorter bit.

I went to a hobby shop and bought a drill to put a hole in a mirror for a clock. The same will work for ceramics. The trick is to go slow with little downward pressure. HAMMKERDRILLS DO NOT WORK.
