many screens can eventually suffer from color being burned into them permenantly. If the same unmoving image is displayed for a very long time, the screen becomes damaged and will always show a "shadow" of that image, even when projecting other things.

when you're working on your computer, the screen's colors are often shifting as you go from window to window and program to program. when you stop working and leave your computer, however, the image goes still and nothing moves. Here's where the screen saver comes in, it sets up a changing image on the screen so that no portion of the screen will display the same image long enough to be damaged. this prolongs the useful life of your monitor and as such i DON'T recommend you turn the screen saver off

Screen-savers were invented in the early 80's when people were using mono screens and bright colours would weakening the screen thats why screensavers were used to protecting the screens of being burned by bright colours when computer is idle. Nowadays screensavers are more visual detail rather then a need.

If you have the old type of screen, the really big one, then leaving an constant image on for a long period of time burns the image permanently onto the screen. The screen saver usually involves having moving objects to change the image on the screen to preclude any single image from burning on to the screen.

Hope this answers your question :)

They don't actually save anything on modern computer monitors. Older monitors would sometimes get "burn-in". A ghosting image from what was displayed for a long time. The screen savers kept the pixels "moving" so that burn-in didn't occur. Now screen savers are just for amusement or basic password protection if you set a password.

Basically how they save your screen is that if you don't have a screen saver on, and you leave the same thing on yoru screen picture, words etc, they will eventually get burned into the screen, or like always be able to see them there on the screen. Even when looking at something else. So basically screen savers keep a constant moving picture so that nothing can permenently get burned into your screen. If you don' thave one look into one =)
