Yes your counter tops need to be sealed. It is a natural stone and is porous.Granite should be sealed once a year.You can get a granite sealer at you local hardware store.You just wipe it on.

Open your cupboards and look under the granite? You may have mold.

Yes, granite counter tops should be sealed. It is recommended that this be done once per year. A good sealer can be found in the kitchen department of your local home center (Home Depot, Lowe's, etc.). If you haven't cleaned/sealed the granite for 5 years, you should also use the disinfectant/cleaner also found there. Then seal the countertop.

LOVE my granite countertops & find them very easy to maintain. I seal them every six months with a simple product that just wipes on & no other upkeep is needed. They look as gorgeous as the day they were installed.
For me, the best thing about granite (besides the natural beauty) is that the surface is my cutting board, pastry board, etc. I just have to be careful about dulling my knives when chopping on the granite - but I don't have to worry about damaging the countertop.
I use a spray sealer that's made by Stone Care International (SCI). It's called Stone Spray-N-Seal Sealer & comes in an 8 oz. non-aerosol plastic bottle.
I get it from the granite business that installed my countertops but I think you can get at any home center. The installation company said they could send someone out to seal it (for a fee, of course) but they recommended that owners do it themselves because it's so simple. They also said that any granite sealer would do the job but I just felt better getting it from them. It really is a simple, wipe-on process (easy instructions on the bottle).

This question is more complex than it appears because while all granite needs to be sealed, not everything sold as granite is granite. My 'granite' is emerald pearl. It doesn't not need sealing - in fact, it could not absorb sealant if you wanted to seal it.
