Why do you think it is OK?

I work in health care and have seen medical staffed cursed, shoved, hit and have to duck objects thrown at them. They complain and are given a lecture about customer service. I have made up my mind that I will call the police and press charges against the person if I ever encounter the situation. I can always get another job. Why do some people think it is OK to abuse service people? Do they think that the louder they get the faster I will assist you? There isn't a shortage of qualified nurses but the people quit when they get enough. Don't hospitals and patients understand that a experienced worker is valuable. They have the experience to see potential problems before they become problems. The next time you are sick or have a family member in the hospital remember the more rude you are doesn't mean the the better care you get. It means nurses and other staff avoid the room and go in only when necessary. You get the required care but not the extra care they can give.

Of course we get treated that way, these people are abusing the system, the ones that are rude, and demanding feel that you owe them, others are just in pain, and may not mean to be so hateful, but, realize that working in the medical field, you come across all kinds of people, and you probally knew that before going into it. I worked on an ambulance for 6 years, and I had a guy put my partner in a choke hold right in front of me and was beating the crap out of him, I had to hit the guy to get him off. Spit on, cursed at, you name it. It is just the job......

Nice to hear from a health care professional that health care professionals really are jerks, and it isn't just our imagination.

I was on a ventilator, forced to use a pen and paper for my only communication. A nurse came in with a phlebotomist, she told me she was going to try to put a new I.V. line in my left arm. I frantically signed for my pad and paper. The nurse said, no more writing for you, you let her do her job.

I had to endure 10 minutes of being poked with a needle before I finally slammed my hand down away from the phlebotomist and again signed for my pad and paper. The nurse then said, I needed to calm down. I was of course crying at this point, and a huge bruise was forming on my arm. She finally gave me the paper where I wrote that a phlebotomist had already told me I had no viable veins left in my arm and to instruct people not to try to use it for I.V. or blood test. To this the nurse said, right, you need some atavan.

Maybe I should have called the police. Too bad I was intubated and at the mercy of that *****. I could go on and on about so called health care professionals abuse of patients. Compassion is in short supply when there are no witnesses.

Shame on all of you.

Abuse by anyone is not acceptable but on the other hand. People who run hospitals should have adequeate staff. Why should I suffer or be ignored because you are understaffed. After all it's not my fault either and you are charging my insurance an arm and a leg plus my deducitable on top of that. Don't I have rights too?

I agree with what you are saying, but you have to look at it from the patients point of view also. When in pain, alone, etc. and are scared there are emotions that come out angry and abusive, but in no means makes that person an abusive one outside of the hospital. And you aren't the only ones who get abused. I'm a secretary and I have had things thrown at me too, hung up on, called every name in the book, etc. all because my boss is in a meeting and people tend to get mad at me and accuse me of lying about it. So, basically until EVERYONE hits maturity towards those in offices, customer services, etc. we will all be abused. Get used to it and get over it. No reason to call police or get sued. You wanted the job, deal with what comes with it.

I feel like i am in the minority, because I believe that No worker should be required to tolerate abuse. There are a lot of naysayers which will give 200 mean comments as to why a worker should!!
