Why is it so difficult to get some of the best Alfred Hitchcock movies?

I have been looking for Rebecca and Notorious for several years, yet the only DVD I can find to purchase new is Notorious, and it costs $40 from Borders, which seems outrageous. Aren't these both well-known and well-liked Hitchcock movies? Why aren't they more readily available? Does anyone know of a source where I can purchase them new at a reasonable price?

The issue regarding these films is that they are owned by MGM.

They licensed Criterion to release Notorious and others (expensive versions) but snatched the rights back a couple of years ago, and yet haven't released them themselves. However various sites (including Digital Bits) have reported that a box set containing The Lady Vanishes, Notorious, The Paradine Case, Rebecca, Sabotage, Spellbound, The Thirty-Nine Steps and Young & Innocent is apparently due to be released - no date has been announced yet, but at least they should be available eventually.

I agree that it is very surprising and disappointing that they have been allowed to go out of print in the US.

If you can't wait, they are available in the UK and can easily be imported from Amazon.co.uk but you will need to make your player multi-region. You can check if your player can be hacked etc at

Hope this helps a little!

Where I work we can call and order movies. I work in a grocery store with a video section in St. Louis. If you ask someone behind the counter if they can order something they can call and check on the price for you.

Boy, i did a search and I could not find it for for less than $50. I think I'll cherish my old VHS version more now.
