2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited, Knock Sound..HELP!!?
I just bought a 2002 jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. I have this loud knock that occurs when I hit second gear. I thought it was the transmission, but when I floor it or drive it hard it shifts smooth. If i am just driving it easy or normal, it makes a loud knock. The knock does not occur when i shift to second. It occurs after i hit second gear and take my foot off of the gas. Really weird please if someone knows what this could be let me know.

Can you tell where the noise is coming from? It may be as simple as an exhaust hanger loose, or as serious as a main bearing in the engine. If you bought this from a dealer, take it back and have it checked. If it is in the drive train, it may be warranteed. Good luck
The Grand Cherokee is a lot nicer but it might not be as reliable as the CR-V. The Honda, however, will have an I-4 and will be just bare bones while the Jeep will be loaded, since it's a Limited. It might also have a V8, which is cool, but I don't know if you worry about mpg that much. If you do, you might want to get the CR-V. Good luck.
I agree it does sound like a driveline problem as it is only happening after you shift into 2nd gear. It could posibly be a worn u-joint/constant velocity joint (loose or sticky) that the right "pitch" of torque and driveline backlash causes the noise at that time but not at other instances. The real test is to investigate where in the vehicle you can feel/hear it best when it happens, gear shift, clutch pedal, floorboards front rear, left side right side etc. Have someone with you in the vehicle to feel it out.
i own a repair shop and it kind of sounds like you might have bad engine or transmission mount in it,i think that might be the thump or knocking sound your hearing, what id do is have it put up in the air and have all the mounts checked on it ,it will only take a few minutes to see if there is one broken on it,its either that or a pipe banging on the bottom of it,but id drive it real easy until i figured it out, good luck i hope this helps.
jeeps are well known for rear ends going out & drive shaft universal joints going bad as well. get a shop to put it up on the lift & check the u-joints & rear end.
