What does a registry cleaner really do? Is it really save to fix such any registry errors?

- I recently purchase a registry cleaner which is 'Registry Fix' and after I already installed it on my computer of course I already started to scan my computer to search for errors, and after the scanning it was able to detect more than 500 errors so what I did is I click the 'Clean Errors' in order to fix it. Then after the fixing of errors, I was already confident because it seems that it makes the performance of my computer faster. But when I tried to open the Encarta Kids 2007, there is an error that appear which says something like this: "Cannot load the program because some files are missing....". But when I opened the Microsoft Student with Encarta 2007 it was able to work properly. So I guess at that time that maybe when I tried to run  the 'Registry Fix' it also removes some of the files of Encarta Kids 2007 that makes such error to the loading of the program.

- Note: Before I installed the 'Registry Fix', all my programs are working prperly including the Encarta Kids 2007

Hi,

a registry cleaner normally tries to delete unnecessary keys in your registry, so it can boost up a bit your computer speed and help deleting some programs. The down side is that some registry cleaners can also delete DLL files, this can result in programs not working anymore :( 

Also, you have to know that a registry contains thousands of keys, so deleting a couple hundreds won't do dramatic changes in computer performances (it will help, but ain't worth the risks). You are better trying to tweak at a couple of places your registry instead of running a registry cleaner. 

The down line is, in my opinion, not to use registry cleaners. If you want to boost your computer speed by playing in the registry, do some manual tweaks and always backup your registry before doing so.
