Why Do People Ask for "Honest" Opinions If...?

...they just get all worked up and defensive when people GIVE the honest opinions the asker requested in the FIRST place?

If you aren't prepared to deal with the HONEST answers and/or opinions you've asked for, why bother asking the question at all?

I just don't understand this.
I can't even count the number of times an asker has stated "all opinions welcome!" yet that same asker gets incredibly defensive when an opinion is stated that the asker doesn't agree with.

If you can't deal with the honest opinions or answers you've asked for, don't ask the question. Or at least let everyone know that only those that agree with you should answer your question.

I'm with ya there. Some people on here are just idiotic.
It is just like the people that ask a question wanting to know if..say, something is wrong or right, then give their point of view on it, and in the end pick the person that totally agrees with them, gives accolades, etc, for the best answer. What is the point of that? Why ask the question if no matter what other people say, even if it is correct, and true, you aren't going to change your mind on it?

Sometimes I wonder if some people's hamsters have died, but the wheel is still spinning....

It's unfortunate, because if they're trying to figure out how their child's name will/would be received among the wide world, this is an EXCELLENT way to find out - I think you get a broad cross-section of people at Y!A. But in the end, I think most people just want unbridled approbation and to be told that all the creativity they used to devise an unusual name for their unsuspecting child makes them uniquely brilliant and interesting.

This comes up in the states sometimes. In the culture over here, the most common way is to smile and simply say "okay" and walk away and go do something else.

They think they want to know all sides to an argument/story/rationalization or whatever.

But the truth is that they probably already have an answer in their minds. They are just looking for approval from others. When they get disapproval they don't like it so they get pissy.
