I need suggestions about areas to move to in Austin, Texas. What are the best areas you recommend for me?
I am in my early to mid-30's with a good career and I am looking for a good area to rent an apartment. I might seem picky but here's what I am looking for: a location where there isn't high crime (or ghetto/projects/low income housing), I don't want to live around a lot of college kids nor do I want to reside around uptight, snobbish yuppies and I would like to have decent access to activities and shopping. Please give me as much feedback as you can. What areas are ideal (with general directions such as North Austin or Downtown and more specific landmarks such as major streets, roads and highways) for my select criteria? The ideal location really IS going to depend on where you will be working. The morning commute can be a bit much at times. Some areas to check out would be Cedar Park/NW Austin or Round Rock (about 10-15 miles north of downtown Austin). There is a new development called The Domain that you may want to check out (brand new high end apartments, away from the college crowd but not far from downtown). I would also recommend looking into a locator service to help you (free to you, they are paid by the apartments that you move in to). Good luck!!
My first question is where in Austin is your job located? If you work in North Austin, you'd better live in North Austin; traffic is soooo bad. I-35 is jam packed most of the time. I lived in South Austin and at one point worked in North Austin. Big mistake. It seems to me that if you're looking north of Austin such as Roundrock, it gets kind of expensive up there as far as housing goes.
For your requirements, North Austin is probably your better bet. South Austin is where more of the college kids are and there's 6th street and all the good party locations. North Austin is a bit nicer. Although there are some good locations on the 360 loop (also known as N. Capital of Texas Hwy) where all the green rolling hills are and Bee Cave was a nice drive too.
When I first moved there I used an apartment locator service to help me figure out the best place to live as far as what amenities I required, distance from work and other important locations. I would recommend you do the same.
I live in Southwest Austin and love it. Depending on where you work, you might consider the South MoPac (Loop 1) area near William Cannon and Slaughter (which includes the Circle C neighborhood). This area is relatively newly developed, so all the amenities are in great shape - good grocery stores, lots of shopping, movie theaters, parks, et cetera. Everything you need is closeby. There's a mix of demographics here, but it's heavy on the young families. The proportion of houses to apartments is about 60/40, so it's not jam-packed with apartment dwellers. I know there are some apartment complexes that offer renter's equity nearby. This area has easy access to MoPac, which gets you downtown in just a few minutes; it also has easy access to Ben White (Highway 290 West) which gets you over to IH 35 in a jiffy if needed.

I curentlly live near westlake at the 360 Bridge area. It really depends where you work. At the location I live there are building very nice aparmentw and near 360 there is a stucco apartments that i don't rmember the name of but it is on 360 and 2222 north side. They have great views and location. Also it is near the Domain, Barton Creek, and Lakeline. I highly recomend that area.
