Because in the Battle of Saipan in WWII Maj Gen Howlin Mad Smith USMC replaced Brig Gen Ralph Smith, no relation, in for the failure of Smith's corp to take objectives in a timely manner.

This was in the view of the US Army unforgivable and wrong since the Marines were not a real fighting force. What had really happened was the the Army and the Marines had different ways of fighting and R Smith had fought his Corp in the Army way which Howlin Mad saw as wrong.
