When did the word emo start being used?

I`m starting to feel really old.....
I searched the term emo when I saw it being used on Yahoo Answers..and found out it is a variation on Goth.
I had a lot of Goth friends when I was at high school and Uni WAAAAY back in the late 80`s (I tried to be a goth...but was too cheerful to really get into it).
When did the phrase Emo start to be used and were there any other phases in between?

Nobody knows the original maker of the word, but it came out of D.C. in the 80's. Or at least that's what everyone says. Blink 182 has a song Called 'Emo' in their 1997 album Dude Ranch which proves it's existence before 2000. People say it is a genre and it applys to 80's punk bands but the genre of it only came out about 1997 so if it applys to it now then other genres should apply to older bands as well that did not exist decades ago. Anyways I've been doing the emo thing for about 8 years now and listened to bands that wear considered emo before it was recognized but even I don't know all of it's orgins 100%.

In the 80s.
It was first used to describe a type of hardcore-punk. Then it was being used to describe indie influenced by those hardcore-punk bands. And now its being used to describe pop-rock and some posthardcore bands, along with people who fit the "emo stereotype" which isnt really goth but close enough anyways.

Emo just means you cut yourself, you hate yourself, you wear black clothes and black makeup, and you want everyone else to go to hell. I dont know when this started but emo people scare me. The main reason why it started is because a new section of punk rock was made called emo. The lyrics consisted of wanting to kill yourself or murder people, gay crap like that. Other than emo and goth I dont think there are anyother phases in between sorry.

Thats a very good question. Emo's are normal people, they just act and look differently than everyone else. They like black, and like rock music. Their also kind of moody at times, or let's just say "sensitive". And not ALL emo's cut themselves, so don't talk about something, unless you really know about it.
