Can you purchase short term disability?

I work for DHS (the government) and am going through the same thing as you. I live in CA, and don't pay into state disability. I've looked into it and I see that you can purchase short term disability insurance, BUT the catch is most places will not insure you if you're currently pregnant. It's almost like they consider your current pregnancy a pre-exsisting condition and don't want to deal with it. Just look it up online.....see what your state says. I had a co-worker tell me to look in to filing a state disability claim, reason being is that if you had a job prior to the one you have now, you might have paid into disability and if you never used it, there's a possibility you may still be entitled to a check.
