A question for parents who gave up their child...?

What is the correct term when reffering to my childs bio mom? A relative suggested birth mom but I have heard some take offense to that. I would like a non-offensive, respectful term as the children will be hearing and using it.

I was adopted and I refer to my birth mom as just that birth mom or sometimes I even say biological mom...when I am talking to her I call her by her first name ...... it works for us.

Well first off, it doesn't matter what other people take offense to so long as the situation is comfortable between you and your child.

I am an adopted child and while I have nothing but respect for my "birth mom" (who I have never met), she lost certain rights when she signed those papers, like what she will be referred to.

Birth mom sounds like the most logical name since that is exactly what she is. I call my birth mom my mother and my adoptive mom my mom. After all, she is the "mom" that kissed my booboos and so on.

I see nothing at all wrong with referring to her as their "birth mother". A friend of mine refers to her birth mom as her "first mom". The most important thing is to come up with a name that the children like. When/if they are old enough, you should as them what they would like to call her. Let it be their decision.

Good Luck!

I use the term biological mother when referring to my grand-children's estranged mother. I only take offense when she is referred to as their "real mother" as she was anything but a real mother. I suppose birth mother would be acceptable too, but I personally like biological mother best.

I wouldn't worry about offending anyone. She would either be the birth mother or the biological mother. Either work. But birth mother is easier for a young child to say.

Biological mom is probably best. Birth mom is not offensive..don't know where someone would think that. What IS offensive is when someone asks about the "REAL" mom. grrr!
