Why do gay men act like women and gay women dress and try to look like men?

I am genuinely curious as to why gay males tend to act like they have (a female version of) chests and why gay women cut their hair in masculine styles and dress masculine.

I have no problems w/ the gay community and, in fact, have friends that are gay but they still keep their gender identity.

No slanderous remarks or jokes please. I am actually very curious about this. I am a heterosexual female and just cant understand why someone would try to be someone they are not.

I dont hang out a gay bars. I work for a major amusement park and see over 25,000 people every day.

In my opinion (and this is just my opinion mind you) if you are female, look like it and vice versa for males. If you like the same sex thats fine but when a female looks more masculine than my own husband then I have to wonder a bit. Its getting harder and harder to tell the 2 genders apart now a days.

Gender is pretty much an artificial social construct anyway, given that human beings behave in many different shadings of Gender whether they know it or not.
Don't you know women who boss their husbands around, or who would rather do sports than do "girly " things? Don't you know men who are the "soft" one in a family that the kids go to, rather than mom? We don't call those "acting male" or "acting female".
Also, Gay,Lesbian and Transgender(like me) people have more freedom and permission to express themselves openly, so the contrast is more evident. Straight culture is (sadly) mostly homophobic, patriarchal, hierarchal and oppressive.

Finally, human attraction has a butch/femme masculine/feminine give/receive dominant/submissive dynamic that makes it exciting and delicious. I guarantee you that there is some "masculine" guy in your community who is a soft "girl" with his wife behind closed doors and may even dress the part.
good question, actually.

Well i ask that all the time, i wonder that also just as well as you do. I am a lesbian and i dont dress like a boy nor act like a boy, but i guess some girls out there really feel better in boy clothes, but i also wonder trust me i do. I know it must be a little hard for all the people out there that are close minded seeing a girl or a boy just walk dressed as the oposite sex. But i guess it does make them happy because why would they be exposing them self everyday to that possible critism. So in conclusion i guess they do it because it makes them feel more confortable with their body. =) and i dont think you have to hang around a drag show everyday, ive seen it everywhere now and days, specially in six flags and knotts berry farm. all those amuzement parks. so i understand your question. well if you find a more logical answer first lol tell me because it would explain a lot. well hope you get your answer...byez!

Its purely stereotypical.

Effemination and masculation are just as common in the heterosexual populous as the homosexual populous, society just shines light on the homosexuals.

Honestly, and don't get me wrong I have NO problem with female masculation, but a woman is blessed with beautiful curves, and breasts, and biologically feminine features, and as gay as I am, I have an undying respect for how beautifully a woman is made, and it almost seems a shame to get rid of that with over masculation. I mean, I can understand male attire, but women just have so much to work with, it almost taken for granted in society.

As for men, well, haha, boys will be boys, and I don't have a problem with effemniation of men either. Its a tad annoying though to have my ear chated off by some guy trying to pass as a valley girl with pecs, coupled with zero conversation skill, and Im ready to douse myself in gasoline as light up a match.

But yeah, I'm pretty much okay with a guy in a dress if hes not annoying. And I'm pretty much okay with a girl in a suit, if she still uses that which nature has so kindly rewarded her with.

What I don't get is how you define an action, a syle of dressing or a hair cut as being masculine or feminie....I mean Halle Berry had really REALLY short hair for a while - did you think she was masculine? Mike Tyson has the softest lispiest voice on the planet - you gonna go up to him and call him a sissy?

Why do you try and put people in certian gender roles and box them up? I think you limit yourself when youplaces these limits on other people.

Many homosexuals, and even heterosexuals, find the concept of a singular gender identity very constraining. Society sometimes forgets that gender and sex are two different things. Sex is biological, while gender is simply the attributes society puts to each sex. For example, in the past, only men wore pants and it was considered cross dressing for a woman to wear pants. Similarly, men in the 16th and 17th centuries wore wigs, makeup, and wore high heels and leggings. You might be a woman biologically, but feel closer to the male gender identity. The concept of gender identity is always changing.
