It's a bleeding @ symbol. It means that email is bleeding us from interaction with real humans.

Turn it 90 degrees and it is the all-seeing eye.

It looks evil to me. It kind of looks the the horn which Italians usually wear to ward off evil. (The horn is suppost to be the devils you know what.)
