intution. Completely ignoring logic and reason, just going with the flow of what your mind is telling you...couldn't you just say "god or the devil" has been telling me all along. so i persisted and this is where I ended up. With both figures being imprinted in our brains from such a young age, couldn't we feel justified to lead such a supposively reckless or wonderful life?

You might feel justified, but then there would be no order in the world. Certain logical and ethical guidelines are required in any society. Think about it, if everyone acted out of their gut instinct there's no telling what that instinct might dictate.
If you look at it from a Creationist point of view, the devil strives on disorder and confusion, emotions and instinct. God is orderly. Even from a evolutionary point of view, if we truly are "animals" then the instinct would be to kill others or act sexually un-bridled...what type of society would we have then?
Isn't that the goal? Life is reckless and wonderful all at once. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. We've been conditioned to not trust our gut. It takes a long time to erase the conditioning. Who's life is it anyway? The God/devil argument is just part of the conditioning. When you realize there is no devil, only God and we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively it makes life more fun!
