ummm... i've never known anybody who idolized the media quite like you present. ever.
personally, i hate the media. i hate the fact that these people, famous for no freaking reason, are crammed down our throught all the time. it gets annoying. who cares? the answer is NOBODY CARES. only the people doing their jobs.
what kind of american did you meet? maybe next time try chatting up with a few more before coming to ridiculous conclusions and talking crap about people you don't even know. it's called Predjudice. try to stray from it. please.

Silly things make one feel more serious?
When one reads of others troubles it makes ones life seem not so bad, also when someone has a great event (like marrying the right person) it gives others hope that this could also be their outcome. Notice that most of the news other than marriages is BAD news - DUI, Divorce, Cheating, Etc.
We have made icons out of those that the camera loves and we gauge our lives by the standards that these people set. As the standard is not too high we can then feel better about ourselves.
