What's a good non-fading hair dye to use at home?

I had highlights in my hair and got sick of them. I tried dying my hair back to it's natural color (light brown) about 6 weeks ago. I used L'Oreal Natural Match and it faded really badly and now my hair looks like it did before I dyed it only brassier. Is there a good hair dye I can use at home that won't fade or fry my hair and will still cover a couple of gray hairs?

I've also been using Brilliant Brunette Shampoo and Conditioner by John Frieda and the Color Boost Glaze as well and my hair still faded. Even after one shampoo it looked lighter.

I dyed my hair a lot as a teenager, and my favourite was always Feria. The colour comes out bright, shiny and vibrant, so it may not be the best choice if you want something subtle. I don't think which brand you choose is nearly as important as the care you take with it afterwards though. Coloured hair requires serious tlc to avoid fading.
