From where do pollock jokes originate?

I always wondered why people would poke fun at the Polish. I've met a couple of them that seemed very intelligent.

In the late 19th century and the early part of the 20th century, many Poles came over to work as manual laborers in our mines. They often came over in large groups and maintained a community together. As a result, most of the laborers often only learned rudimentary English. I'm sure you've come across immigrants who barely speak English. They could be neurosurgeons but without a firm grasp of the language, they sound like idiots while trying to communicate in English. The same thing happened with the Poles. Because their English was so poor, they came across as stupid and their bosses started treating them as such. This stereotype of the "stupid pollock" spread from there.

England.Though in America there are far more Polish and Irish jokes than any other racial jokes in existence. The origins in both countries dealt with massive immigration, and poking fun at the poor English and wrongly equating that with ignorance.Odd,because most Brits and Americans were not bilingual at that time.

America is a nation of immigrants. Every new immigrant group faced discrimination, were made the butt of jokes, etc.
