I know that paint can be made from boiling animal fat and mixing it with pigments, but I can't find information on how the fat should be boiled, what method should be used and how long it should be boiled for. Does anyone know?

To clarify for any dolts reading this, I am trying to help a friend with some traditional buffalo paint to use to paint drums and so on.

Yes I see where you going with this. I think if you boil it over night. I would put it in the oven at say 200 till it gets a thick surface. You may have to try a few times changing the temp up or down and maybe with different grease. I think bacon grease might come to the best surface. I think you will be able to use the thick surface stuff to mix pigment with. good luck...
go to nativeways.com buy a pigment set and mix with crisco.or mix alittle crisco with charcoal for black, white clay for white, duck poop for blue, red ochre a mineral for red.have fun.
