Who were the Monsters of the Midway?

The Chicago Bears used this name for their defense twice in their history --- during the early 1940's and in the mid-1980's. Who were the team members on each of these squads and what positions did they play?

The nickname Monsters of the Midway was originally applied to the University of Chicago "Maroons", a strong college football team under the leadership of Amos Alonzo Stagg. "Midway" is a reference to the Midway Plaisance, a long, green swath of boulevard space bordering the southern end of the campus. (The Bears also borrowed the "C" symbol on their helmets from the U of C Maroons

The "Monsters of the Midway" is most widely known as the nickname for the National Football League's Chicago Bears — particularly the dominant teams of 1940 and 1941. The name underwent something of a revival when the 1985 edition of the Bears proved to be similarly dominant.

No, its just a name people here in Chicago call the Bears when they make the playoffs. Anytime the Bears are a decent team, you'll start hearing "Monsters of the Midway". It can be at any time, any era, just whenever the Bears are good, they become the Monsters of the Midway. It all started in the 40s and 50s and 60s though, with Dick Butkus (LB) and Sid Luckman (QB).

1985 -

D- line - Richard Dent, Dan Hampton, Steve McMichael, William Perry

LBs - Otis Wilson, Mike Singletary, Wilber Marshall

DBs - Leslie Frasier, Todd Bell, Gary Fencik, Mike Richardson

That was all from memory. I'd have to look up the '40 team.
