Any idea what year this reel was made?

It's a South Bend and it says on the underside of the reel spool

" Designed and engineered in the USA- GLADDING group"

Best date I could find on that model would be 1964 or 65. In 1966 that model reel was changed somewhat and built by DAM Quick (Germany? I think). Through the sixties the South Bend Co. went through some management changes and in 1964 South Bend was sold to the B.F. Gladding & Co. which was a well known maker of casting and fly lines.

That's an old looking reel you've got there, just out of interest whats the gears made from as very often older models from pre 1950 have brass gears, i would say about 1930 and most likely has a low retrieve ratio of about 1:2.

Looks like a design similar to an old Mitchell. Go to EBay and see if anything looks like it.

did you check their web site? i found an old Shakespeare reel at good will and i looked at the web site and they had a vintage section. all i did was put in the serial number and it told me what year.
