Assonance -- "clap" and "dance"?

Our teacher gave us this definition and example:

---
assonance – a repetition of vowel sounds without the repetition of consonant sounds e.g. clap, dance
---

But although they're both short, the vowels don't sound the same, do they? Thanks for your help. :)

I think this is on the borderline of assonance, because the pronunciation of "a" don "dance" is more drawn out than in the word "clap". I think "clap" and "class" is much closer...

the vowel sounds are the same in american english the way i pronounce them (i guess with a southern accent, the vowel in dance would be longer than in clap), and i'm pretty sure in british english clap is pronounced the same as in american english but dance has the long "ah" vowel sound.

consonance is cooler though.

Actually they do. The sound is the same as when you say "at and as".
