I would like to ask the San Francisco locals and frequent travelers about Cable Car etiquette. I was wondering if you could fill me in on any tips or unwritten rules regarding riding the cars? I am putting together a speech on riding cable cars and would love to hear what you might have to say about it!

Locals don't ride the cable cars... they're slow and 3 times the cost of the bus. Only tourists ride them. Thus... there is NO etiquette (a few nice suggestions, but they're never followed).

Keep the access doors clear so exiting and entering can go swiftly. Get ready to exit before your stop, so you don't have to hustle.
If you're seated on the outside benches, don't have a lot of packages/heavy coats so there's plenty of room for the people standing on the running board.
If you're standing on the outside, don't stick your arms and legs out.
Make sure you pay, even if the conductor accidentally passes you by.
Wait until the cable car stops before you get on or off.
Don't sing "I Left My Heart in San Francisco." Laugh at the conductor's jokes.

We don't ride those junk, we ride the cheaper, faster, modern, muni buses, so etiquette is look like a complete tourist while riding them, you won't find locals on them.

it's great fun. it's best to buy a day pass, that way you can hop on and off as much as you like. meeting people from all over the world on the cars is neat.
take the car to fisherman's wharf and walk back, that's fun
