Are Catholic Nuns allowed a vacation and can they ever wear civilian clothing?
Their lives seem so dull. Like life in purgatory. Do they ever let their hair down and have a good time?

Scotgirl: I am a Christian and you are right I don't know any Nuns. That is why I asked the question.

Heck yeah!!! Sister Pam at our church wears her habit while working at church but when she is home she wears jeans and shirts, tennis shoes. She works out regularly at the Y. She eats at restuarants with friends and family. Same with our priests. We have one sister that never wears her habit but always wears black, grey or brown. That is her personal choice. The retired sisters in the retirement home always wear their habits. That's their personal choice. The sisters wear what is choosen by their order. And many have a "life" outside of the order. They go bowling, see movies, visits family and friends, have cook-outs, etc.
Their lives are never dull. They do a lot of work and have lots of fun. Some orders are more serious, like monks. But it's their choice to be part of that.
How do you know what purgatory is like????? It's not dull. It's a spiritual place for purification before they enter Heaven. Only the holy can enter Heaven because no evil is allowed there.
I have friends who are Catholic nuns and they are for the most part very happy and fulfilled people who have exciting ministries(teaching, nursing, parish work, missionary work, contemplative retreat work)
The are many different orders and different rules of life from cliostered nuns to active religious sisters0
Many orders do not wear full habits and some only wear 'secular' clothes. Most of the nuns i know do take vacations Most seem to have short hair so they do not let their hair down. Hah! Hah!
Many don't think their lives or dull or would discribe it as purgatory. They are allowed time off to visit family and have vacations and they can wear civilian clothes when not "on the job".
