I'm going to China in May and will need to take a flight or two within the country. The prices look high, but will they be cheaper if I buy them a few days before? Example: Xian to Shanghai (pudong). also, is it cheaper to fly into pudong or the other Shanghai airport for within country flight?

Wait until you are there and try to get a Chinese person to buy them for you or you will be drastically overcharged.

First you arrive and then look for tickets. Tickets get cheaper as the flight time closes and there are seats available. No need to look for anyone. I give you the sites, send send the emai or contact them and you can look for their fares on website. They can even deliver tickets at home in china. good luck.
