Wiccans and other Religious Witches; what do you think of traditions who call their God Lucifer?

I'm not talking about Satanists here. This question is about Witchcraft Religions that use the name Lucifer to describe the Witches' God. For example, Stregha -- in _Aradia: Gospel of the Witches_, Lucifer is named as the brother of Diana and father of Aradia. To be fair, Lucifer was the name of a minor Roman God, and was never originally in the Bible -- repeat -- it is NOT a Biblical name. It was added in translation to the Latin, and remained in subsequent translations. So, just as the image of Pan became the image of the Christian Devil, the name Lucifer became the name of the Christian Devil.

So, my question is one of apologetics. Fundamentalist Christians accuse us of worshiping their Devil, and denying this claim is central to Wiccan apologetics. Do traditions that use the name Lucifer, or emphasize the Horned God's underworld aspects, undermine this apologetic? Or, is there even a point to it?

To continue my thought;

Is it honest to say we don't worship the Christian Devil, when the Christian Devil is in fact a corruption of our God? The Horned God of the Witches is both a God of Fertility and Nature, and of the Underworld and Death. He is consort to the Great Mother, and together they rule the cycles of birth, death, and rebirth. He embodies our Animal Nature -- aspects of our humanity which the Christians would call "sinful." Conversely, for some Wiccans and Witches, the Christian God represents tyrany, repression, the "Patriarchy," a force against freedom, progress, and Enlightenment -- what the Gnostics would call the Demiurge.

To clarify -- Wicca is a new religion, attempting to reconstruct the Medeaval Witchcraft Religion that the Church was supposedly trying to wipe out during the "Burning Times." Satanism and Wicca are very, very different, as any Satanis will tell you. As for the Christian Devil, he is a mythological figure cobbled together from a variety of sources, Biblical legend, Pagan myth, Zoroastrian philosophy, etc. The idea of the Wiccan Horned God comes from the nature, fertility, hunting, agriculture, vegetation, solar, and underworld deities of pre-Christian Europe.

So all of these things -- the Satan of Christianity, the Satan of Theistic Satanism, and the Horned God of Wicca -- are three completely different collages, but cut from the same magazines. The resaults, however, are entirely different. The Christian Devil is a being of Evil, Temptation, Destruction, and Deception. The Wiccan Horned God is concerned with Life, Rebirth, and the cycles of Nature.

With the sudden flood of books and interest in Wicca/Paganism/the Occult, there was a brief possibility that it could enjoy mainstream acceptance, or at the very least, tolerance. It seemed practical at the time to be apologetic.

The reason I say that is many disturbed people, like Charles Manson, Son of Sam, and others, made the occult or anything that looked like it terrifying in the minds of the mainstream population, whether those impressions were based in reality or not.

To come along in the 60's or 70's after those individuals and say, "I worship Lucifer, Satan, or a Horned God" could have gotten you hauled off to the nut house, jail, or worse. In the 90's and 00's, as Wicca peaked in popularity, I think people were cognizant of that history. Couple that with the Satanic panics of the 80's, you just couldn't be too glib. It seems like things have calmed down now, or you wouldn't have shows like Charmed and Harry Potter - you would still have Hammer horror films that prey on that fear.

There was a time when I wanted mainstream acceptance, and I bought into apologetics hook line and sinker. But now I realize that if this was a path that everyone could embrace, it wouldn't be the same. It is a path for seekers, not followers. So my current stance on apologetics is, hell with 'em.

So I'm all for Luciferians, Horned God worshipers, and Satanists. It's not for everyone, and it's better that way. ;)

People can call their gods whatever they like. Who am I to say what their god wants to be called? Is it politically incorrect? Yes, but I hate political correctness. If they believe that is the name of their god - for whatever reason - they should use it.

I find it sad that the fundementalists are so eager to pick at other people's religion that they freak out when someone uses a name like Lucifer. No matter how someone describes their god, if they call him Lucifer it must be devil worship.

And while I disagree with you on the origin of the name Lucifer, I agree that associating him with Satan or the Devil is completely non-Biblical, which makes the arguments even more absurd.

Well first off, Lucifer is not found anywhere in the bible. Satan being Lucifer is a church myth that began with the Catholic Church. Funny how many Christians reject Catholicism yet still hold onto their dogmas. Lucifer was a Roman deity hence the Latin name Lucifer. All angelic entities end in El and not Er so Lucifer being an archangel would be impossible. Some people should read "The Power of Myth."

That being said, whatever floats someone's boat is cool with me.

I think Lucifer is a beautiful name. I see it as being a powerful name, yet very gentle.

There's the obvious that Lucifer means 'Light Barer', but what Xian don't know is "Christ" comes from a title given to Horus: "KRST" (this gives us all the variations too; Kristna, Kristy, Khrestus, Christ etc) and this actually translates to mean pretty much the same as Lucifer.

I don't think Pagans should stop using it just because Xians have corrupted it. We use their deity names as cuss words, doesn't stop them from praying to them.
Frig is now used as a cuss, even though she is still worshiped. She even has a day of the week named after her.

Bugger them. Lucifer rocks, and I've worked very sucessfully with his Daughter.

I study Luciferian Witchcraft, but I don't believe any of the gods to be real, I use their sigils as spells. Lucifer is in fact not in the original bible or Torah. Lucifer is a Roman God, I guess Christians wanted to demonize Roman and other Pagan Gods by making them their Satan.

Why don't you read a bit more into Devil Worshipping, Theistic Satanism and also polytheism then you can decide if your God is the Christian Devil.
