Nickie, you described ALLITERATION.

Assonance is when you have the repetition of vowel sounds in the middle of non-rhyming words. For example:

The bowl was boring the old lady because it rolled over from being too full of casserole.

Bowl, boring, old, rolled, over, and casserole all have that long O sound in the middle.

As for consonance (I assume this was the word that you meant to type, as it's closely related to assonance), that's the exact same thing, but with consonant sounds in the middle of the non-rhyming words.

Example of consonance:

The sticky brick was hurled at the rickety market's marquee by the strict bully.

Sticky, brick, rickety, marquee and strict all have that "CK" sound in the middle.

You usually use these two concepts in poetry analysis. Poets will use sound devices like assonance, consonance and alliteration to create mood and to highlight an important phrase or line.

assonance: repetition of initial constant sounds ie slowly, slithering snakes

consonants: all letters of the alphabet except a, e, i, o, u, and sometimes y
