I know that it is in Athens Greece and was built during the time of Pericles 495 BC to 429 BC. He was the head statesman and responsible for the building of the Parthenon in order to worship the Goddess Athena who protected Athens.

He brought about Athens golden age and Democracy, and built Athens into a great city with the wealth it was getting for protecting the other Greek City States. This made the Spartans angry and hence the Peloponesian War's began and Pericles dies during it not from the war but from plauge brought back from his ships that returned from foreign ports. He had all the people out side the city come into it behind its walls and he created this large wall on two sides right to the sea. He knew he could not beat the Spartans on land and planned on the Sea. He never could have predicted the plauge coming into port. Many also saw his having the locals retreat into the city walls where the city eventually fell after a long time to them rather than stand and fight them on the field.

I feel Pericles had the right idea, they were no match for the Spartans on land but that plague was their undoing allowing the Spartans to take the city. After all this happens Greece is so weakened the Romans were able to nearly walk in and take over!

It was built on the suggestion of Pericles, using money collected from the Delian League (ostensibly for continuing the war against the Persians).

Phidias and Isocates (?) did a lot of the work. If you want to see the really good stuff from the Acropolis, sorry it was blown up or stolen. Some is on display in the British Museum (the Elgin marbles).
