Austria was not a separate country 80 years before Hitler was born. Austria was still a German state (and empire within Germany) and a part of Germany between 1815 to 1866 (German Confederation!) and was then forcefully kicked out of Germany by Prussia and hence needed to leave Germany in January 1867 after the German confederation was dissolved.

Hitler was born in Austria, from a family that lived in Austria for generations.  While he spoke German, it was with an Austrian accent.

Ethnically, he was German. Like many Austrian Germans, Hitler began to develop German nationalist ideas from a young age. He expressed loyalty only to Germany, despising the declining Habsburg Monarchy and its rule over an ethnically variegated empire.

You and your friend have got to grasp the fact that the only thing that Hitler "is" is DEAD.

He was German by right after completing his military service in the Kaiser's army, and also by official naturalization.

The Germans say "Just because you're born in a barn it doesn't mean you are a horse." so Germans can be born in Austria. By the way Germaine doesn't like the Nazis anyway.

He was Austrian, but Austrian populations were nationally/politically separate from Germany, but Austrian peoples were virtually ethnically the same as Germans. There wasn’t much that distinguished them other than a border. 

He was born in Austria but as he considered that country to be part of a larger Germany, he saw himself as German. It doesn't matter what you think.

He has no nationality because he's long dead.
