yes, you can get old war horses for much less than a springfield armory fancy job.
check out the CMP, Civilian Marksmanship Program http://www.odcmp.com/Services/Rifles/m1garand.htm
You have to join some clubs, but the list is as long as your arm, and there are a ton in every state, otherwise you can simply join http://www.thegca.org/images/GCAMemApp.pdf.pdf for $25 and then go to the local range and have the rangemaster observe you and sign this form

or your hunter's education card will work too.
Then get a Service Grade gun for $600

I just got my service grade M1 Garand from the CMP. It's receiver and barrel look almost new, and the bore is fantastic. It wears a new birch stock that matches the other wood very well. Although it took a while to get, the CMP is a very good place to get one from. At this time, they also have M1 Carbines.
About the thumbs down, I think there are anti-hunting, anti-gun trolls that routinely go through this section and give everyone a thumbs down. Maybe some day, these people will get a life.

Not sure why someone gave akluis a thumbs down other than ignorance. ODCMP better known as the civilian marksmanship program was established by congress and offers wonderful deals on M1s. You probably can not find a better deal at a gun show.
Also check out http://www.creedmoorsports.com, many times ODCMP uses them as an outlet and you don't have to jump through all of the hoops as going directly through ODCMP
