In a quick pinch, because I don't know what substance you have on your iron, I would turn it on high, get an old t-shirt, cloth...etc.. and run it over that a few times. This can help to rub off your "stuff".
Also, as a last resort, before you get your new one, you can simply put that same old t-shirt over what you need to iron, ensuring anything that may come off, comes off on the cloth and not your nice clothing.

Just researched for you.....
1. Prepare an ironing board by placing a paper towel or a cotton towel on it.
2. Sprinkle salt on the surface - about a table spoon should work. coarse salt is best(Kosher salt from Morton's is ideal)
3. Plug in and heat the iron to the highest setting. Turn off steam completely.
4. Iron the surface with salt by pressing gently. The dirt will be sticking to salt leaving the iron surface sparkling clean.

Good luck!!

I wouldn't use anything abrasive on the plate, because it would score the metal, and then snag the fibers of whatever you are ironing. My suggestion would be to use a product like Goo Gone and a soft cloth. The idea is to soften the whatever is stuck on your iron and pry it off.

Get a humid cloth not too wet or dry, turn the iron on and preferable use the steam on as well and scrub it firmly as if you were ironing the cloth pressuring the stain against it to remove. If you buy a new iron try to get a steam generator one they are excellent (I suggest t-fal with ultraglide soleplate) as they can make life much easier.
