I posted a question not long ago about the flower that grew in our backyard when we moved into our new apartment. I finally have some pictures that might shed some light on things. I know they're not bird of paradise as was suggested... I know what they look like, but this one has us all stumped.

Looks like a Canna, to me.
Edit: Here is a picture of the Canna species compacta. Although this bloom is fuller, I suspect this is your plant. I am actually going by the leaf structure, more than the bloom.
