What area is the Beverly Hills of Austin, Texas?

I'm from Los Angeles and looking for a good area to teach in when I move to Austin in the fall. I know the pay in better schools is less, but I don't care.

I am tired of working with kids who are poor and gang bangers and have parents that treat teachers like the enemy! I wanted to help once upon a time, but now I don't care. I will probably teach in middle school.

I don't want to fear for my safety.

I just wanted to add to everybody's good answers-- Westlake is in the city of Austin, so don't go looking for Westlake, TX and expect to find it around Austin. Also, the school district there is Eanes ISD ( http://www.eanes.k12.tx.us/education/district/district.php?sectionid=1 ).

The other parts of town mentioned, like Tarrytown, are in Austin ISD ( http://www.austinisd.org ). Even though it is the "big-city" district, it's not at all what your previous experiences were.

These areas are filled with people who have money and who value education and expect all their children to go to college and be rich like they are.

The rich area of Austin is divided into new money and old money. The new money part is Westlake...it is still growing a lot and is bigger than the old money side. The high school here is Westlake.

The old money part is Central Austin (Tarrytown, Pemberton, or Mount Bonnell). These areas are not growing anymore and real estate for a cheap price is very hard to find. The high school here is Austin High.

Both of these areas have great schools and have been rivals for a veryyyy long time. Both of the areas have tons of money, like Michael Dell lives in Tarrytown. Either one will be great! But finding a teaching job here is hard work. What age are you wanting to teach?

Definitely try the West Lake area...but those parents might still treat you like an enemy...but they'll be far from poor and their kids will not be gang bangers. The area is gorgeous, but most young professionals live farther north...Cedar Park is popular.

I'm going to have to agree with the other posters here and go with the Westlake area of Austin (off of 360, in the southwest and west part of town). My youngest brother lives there, and it is nice, even by my standards.

Go look in the Westlake area. That community has many multi-million dollar mansions. Sandra Bullock in fact lives in Westlake. If you want to check out the community, go to this website:

Good luck finding an awsome home and welcome to Texas!
