Would you say that Broadway shows have a huge racial bias?
Many broadway shows don't have too many roles suited for a young asian american. Guys roles are mostly given to the american men. While there are plenty of good asian american men and women, it is hard to land a role unless the role clearly has asian written all over it. However, even Asian roles have been taken by american women and men as well. The only exception to the rule is Lea Salonga. What is your opinion?

Lucee, it's easy for you to say. I am an actor and I see it happen many times. I would go try out for miss saigon with friends and my girl friends lose out to a caucasian girl for the role of kim. After all, the role of the engineer was originally intended for a asian. Then they changed it to a Eurasian! Gimme a break. Don't dare to judge when you don't know the half of it. good answer smarty, but as far as kabuki theater, most of those are all asian versions of broadway plays. We had to find a way to get heard, because we keep getting shunned. I'm hoping Lea Salonga fully breaks the barrier. Right now, she is scratching the surface. She will be there soon. She just recently pulled the lead in Le Mis.

In the past, I think this has been true, but as America progresses, I think you can see strides in Broadway's racial dynamic. For instance, directors are a lot more willing to envision a production outside of the general racial lines. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, revived on Broadway now and starring an entirely African-American cast (including James Earl Jones and Terrance Howard) is the most recent example. You see more of this in the movies, as well, with traditionally "white" roles going to people of color. It's very encouraging. In regard to roles written for Asian people being played by whites, I know, again, that this sort of thing happened in the past, but I've not heard of like it in recent years. In fact, I'm pretty sure there'd be a big public outcry over something so amazingly, overtly racist. There are, however, Asian playhouses and unions for Asian actors, because traditionally, Broadway has mainly catered to Caucasians. Hope this helps some, dear! Where do you perform? I am curious- are you a college student, or are you auditioning in professional theatres? I'm really surprised that a professional theatre, or an educational theatre, would cast non-Asians in roles written for Asian actors, if the choices were available to directors to do so. You're own example of Les Mis is a great example of progress, Les Mis, of couse, being a play about French people. Talented actors should never be blocked in by color of skin.
I believe Broadway may only be the end result of a bias in play writes and productions, these result from the type of stories being told and where we are telling them.
