What is your opinion of the best careers for women with two small children?

meaning an infant and 9 years old. I mean if you have to work (of course in a perfect universe you'd stay home with the baby for 5 years)

But with one year of college behind you, which direction would you advise a woman to go to earn a decent living but maintain a presence in the home?
I had wanted to go into journalism but I guess I can forget about that. Way too many irregular shifts and hours away from the family.

Ideas? anyone?

I don't think you are messed up at all! Just because you never had the opportunity to date when you were younger doesn't mean you have nothing to give. In some ways that might be a nice thing because you won't have any expectations going into a new relationship. As for giving up on women and becoming a hermit.. I'd say you might want to wait on that plan until you are in your 50's. 30's are young! Women today are getting married later and waiting to have their children. You shouldn't give up because you never know what kind of amazing woman you could meet. And just because you don't have any relationship experience doesn't mean a woman is going to think you are gay or weird. The best part about dating is getting to know someone and I'm sure you will find a really special woman who will completely understand what you have been through. Never give up on love. Maybe you'll find it when you least expect it :)

Something you can do from home would be ideal. I sell Avon; it is slow going but that's my own fault for being lazy. If you live in a big city the potential for earning a ton of money is HUGE and it really isn't that much work. Plus you get discounts on all their stuff....and it's really excellent-quality stuff, far better than it was 10 or 15 years ago!! You have 2 options with Avon. You can either be a sales rep, which is what I am, or you can be in leadership. As a rep you pretty much "just" sell Avon products. If you are in leadership your job is to sign other people up to sell Avon, and they will be members of your team. The more members your team has, the higher you climb on the ladder. Leadership is a bit more work but it is also more profitable. It's good for a more ambitious woman. Check it out!

There are companies that hire call center agents (customer service reps) who can work from their homes, provided they have a broadband connection and a good PC. However, you must have childcare for during the time you are working, because if the company hears a crying child in the background of a customer call, you're out. It's good, though, because you can sign up for the shifts you need and be flexible with your hours.

There are a lot of scams out there. Go with legitimate companies only: WestatHome.com, Convergys.com, Arise.com, InfoCision.com, LiveOps.com, AlpineAccess.com. They should all have info on their Web sites about applying for home rep positions.
