high CPU Usage?

my laptops CPU usage flies up to 90-100% as soon as I run any program and with games and internet etc. doesnt come down, leading to my computer crashing after about 10 mins.

I've been told to move my photos to discs and have deleted nearly all my programs yet my CPU is still high...

can anybody help me with this problem????

1GB is enough for normal tasks if you have Vista. But for gaming you should get 2GB. Ye, your CPU might be old.

The best way is to download Ccleaner here http://bitly.com/UrALrK

Or you can go on Windows operating system locate the command prompt and go there to do the following:
Create a Recovery file of system and date it today.

Then begin by;
delete the 'Temp' folders..they have hidden subfolders so you need to set the attributes in order to bypass this. For each subfolder delete all cookies and rubbish left behnd after install-uninstalled programs. Do a 'dir' command to check your progress. Make sure the 'Temp' file is empty.

goto c:\windows\prefetch and delete everything in there..no exceptions

goto c:\windows folder and delete all the '$' files that have been installed by updates. They can all be succesfully deleted and just take up disk space.

Locate the Internet Temporary Files..Check to see how high the saving level is..some have it set at 30 days..but that stores faaaar tooo much data..though it slows down the system overal. Keep this to a minimum..suggest 2 or 5 at most.

Delete all 'cookies' all those you don't need.

Locate the windows directory and go through the folders you know and those you don't need. Check this once a week at least. Some programs will install under XP as NT and older systems where there is no check of systems weight.

Check to see that system files have not changed since last booting. Things like .ini files or .bat are important items.

Check for 'Hidden Directories' all over the disk...do this at the command prompt:

dir *.* /ah wil show these hidden directories

Check the 'dir' command for all parameters

You should definitely scan for spyware to make sure your computer is not infested. This can cause mutiple programs and process to be loaded into CPU access and RAM thus making your CPU usage high. However, you should monitor it to make sure that the spikes in usage are temporary or constant. Constant would indicate a virus. Monitor it by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del. This brings up the task manager. Check out the link below to see visuals.

Here are some ways to cut down down on CPU access
Disable the amount of services running in the background-- You can do this by altering your computer configuration. Here is how:
1. Open your Start menu.
2. Click Run
3. In the command screen type "msconfig.exe"
4. In the "system configuration utility",click either "service" or "startup" tab
5. Uncheck all programs that your are no longer using.
6. Click "OK"

If you haven't cleaned your registry in a while. This is necessary. Your registry holds all the information regarding updates, installs, un-installs etc. Each one of those events has a key and that key need your PC's resources. So, if you should clean this up. Do a registry scan if you got more than 20 errors you should clean it. Also your Operating System will constantly try to fix these errors which cause spikes in CPU access.

You should also check to see what programs are running in your task manager. If you see a program like svchost.exe. You may need to clear this program in order to return your computer back to normal CPU access time. There are several ways to do this. Here is one of them.

1. Click Start | Run (type) "services.msc" (no quotes)
2. Scroll down to "DNS Client", Right-click and select: Properties
3. Click the drop-down arrow for "Startup type"
4. Select: Manual, click Apply/Ok and restart.
(IF you are the only PC user, and not part of a domain.)
That also eliminates one SVCHOST process in Task Manager

Hope this helps!

The same thing is happening to me with my useless 2000 $ PC. i suspect that while i was playing one of these online multiplayers the host server tapped into my PC and screwed everything up. i have done multiple ( different companies) scans and nothing shows up. it seems as if the CPU is trying to do all the work even though i have an 8800gt oc GP. there is something called dma controller that is missing from my PC.it allows memory to be used without using CPU.OK, so i tried to update that driver, said no driver, clicked on other and it said driver working correctly.......... so anyway that's the only thing i know. also my files are missing and or moved around...and i didn't move anything. i bought some recovery disks and will most likely have to erase or replace the hard drive.

My laptop does this too. Mostly becasue mine is a very basic 4 year old laptop. How old is yours?

Try upgrading your RAM, that will help a bit with the crashing.
also go into start menu, click run, then type msconfig and press enter.
click on the startup tab and untick the boxes of uselss programs that run at startup. That helps. Also go into control panel, then click system, then the advanced tab, and select adjust for best performance. Sure it makes your comp look like its running 98, but hey it helps.
Good Luck!
