Why dog likes to lick him self.?

In the morning, durring the afternoon and at night, my dog just loves to lick himself. He nibbles on his legs and licks his paws. He has stains on his paws from all the licking he does. Is this normal? Someone told me it might be from the food i am giving him?

Could be a food allergy.. Could be a few things.. You talk to the vet about it???

Our dog does the same thing until she is raw and bleeding. We have had her on antihistamines for almost 2 yrs and no change. She pretty much wears a cone 24/7.
You can try giving your dog Benadryl once a day. If it is a food allergy your dog will lick its paws alot. Chances are a skin type allergy. Bath with an oatmeal shampoo and rince well. If sores develop then put a cone on him and give benadryl.

I agree, it could be from the food.
Some questions to ask is: is he allergic to any types of food, material, any thing his paws make contact with regularly? He may have some type of parasite.
How many times is he walked, dogs without enough activity will find other ways to keep themselves occupied and licking is a great way to make themselves seem productive.
A good vet check might be in order for this little fellow.

This is usually a sign of ood allergies, it can be attributed to stress also but is more than likely a food allergy..some dogs do not do well with food colorings, corn, soy..you can check that ..maybe try a different brand of food for a few weeks and see what happends..when taking him off his food you mix new food wiht his old food for a few days adding less and less of old food so he doesn't get sick..If it is allergies you should see a difference after a month.

This is not normal...usually. If he has a favorite spot, look there and see if there is anything unusual. Mention these to the vet if there is anything there. Otherwise, your dog just likes to lick.
