Tri-color gold fish now white?

Question

We have a 6 gallon tank, with 3 very healthy gold fish. We clean like we are suppose to, feed as we are suppose to, use tap water that is filtered by us, plus add Aqua Plus water treatment liquid according to the directions. Roosevelt is the "typical" orange color, Churchill is black & orange, and Hilter was black (on his upper lip hince his name) orange & white. We've had them for several months, and have had no health problems with any of them. Over the past 2 weeks Hitler went from the tri-color fish to a pure white...except for a very light orange tint to part of his tail. We asked the people at the store we got them from, and they said we are doing everything right, but should try feeding them "color enhancing" food. We have only noticed that the white is now alot "brighter". Has anyone ever had this happen to their goldfish or do we have a very special boy??

Kay: Sorry I didn't mean to give you a thumbs down...and the boys are about 3 inches each and have plenty of room, as they grow so will their tank as we will buy larger.

They change colors when they mature. Also 6 gallons is way too small for just one goldfish. If you keep them this way, you will have problems down the line. You might want to look into getting a larger set up, used aquariums are in the paper and on craigslist for  a very good price.

If I calculated the volume right....this is a 45 litre tank (11 us gallons) So not not suitable for a goldfish. However a single male bettafish would love this tank (as long as it is a cycled tank!) Most goldfish need large tanks or ponds. Despite what pet stores want you to believe, gold fish cannot live in bowls or small tanks. They can grow large and live for decades if housed properly.

Goldfish often change colors as they mature.  You need to upgrade your tank very soon.  3 goldfish need a minimum of a 40 gallon tank not a 6 gallon tank.  They will grow up to 12" long and keeping them in a small space leads to organ compression and death.

I have had several goldfish turn white.  Unfortunately, they never became orange again.  I am not sure what causes this however, the fish lived for many years with no other health problems.
