How long for our cat to accept new dog?

Question

About 3 hours ago we brought home a 3 year old German Shepherd, she is a good girl. 
I was worried about her going after our cat but was I surprised when we were met at the door by the cat who immediately puffed up and ran straight towards the dog growling and hissing!

We just lost our Great Dane to cancer 3 weeks ago yesterday, wasn't really looking for another dog yet but this girl was in need of a loving home and we just happen to have one - 
anyway the cat has been around a dog since we brought him home (he was an adult when we adopted him from the shelter). 
Never had a problem with our Dane and him.

Is he just trying to let the dog know he's the boss? She appears to want to be his friend but so far he will have none of it - my wife got between the two of them when the cat was going after the dog about an hour ago and he laid in to her leg and bit her pretty good.

Anyone else had a similar experience? 

Will it get better?

It will get better.  The cat is trying to be the dominant  or pack leader in the house.  The dog seems cool wiht this.  That is a good thing because the dog could rip the little cats head off.  I have the same situation.  I have a 85lbs. collie that my 13lb.s cat lords over.  Cat has rules the roost since day one they were otgether and she still 4 months later does not like Bella the dog.  She tolerates her but does not want to be near her.  If Bella gets to close to the cat, Lady hisses and sacks the dog across the face.  Its actually funny to watch after you are sure the dog won't eat the cat!  Be patient they will adjust to each other.  They may never be best friends but  they will coexsist without actually fighting.

Every animal is different, some take a little bit of time to grown accustomed to a new feline or doggie in the house or some never do! Keep in mind the way your cat see's it is "I was here first, this is my territory!" Give them time to get used to each other, don't push it and let them come around on their own. i suggest not pushing them to get along. let them do it on there own. if the cat has been around dogs before, he shouldn't have a problem with this one. let them work it out on their own, just don't let the cat attack the dogs head, she could lose an eye. good luck !
