Is there a special service that helps the elderly...?

Question

A girlfriend of mine has a grandma who volunteers with meals on wheels... one of their little old ladies cried to her with a story about her being very old and not being able to tend to her lawn. Now she's been cited by the city to have it cut, or she will be fined up the wazoo... With no family and very little money what can she do... I don't have a lawn mower, or I'd do it myself, and the work that needs to be done is so extreme, it would cost more than an arm and a leg to just pay a lawn service to come out and tend to that for her... What or where can I go to get this little very precious lady some help...

Some churches participate in this kind of thing once a year through Rebuilding Together, but there are probably others that would like a service project for their teenagers or adults.

There isn't always a special service, but there's usually someone who will do things if you just keep asking. The best part for you is that, because you're not asking for yourself, your feelings aren't hurt when someone says, "No." BTW, if people say they can't do it, ask for a dollar or two to buy gas for the bush hog someone will need to clean up a yard that's been cited by the city--this isn't a job for a push mower. That way, when you find someone with the right equipment, you'll have a contribution for his/her work. If you wind up with money, but no more people to ask, run an ad on craigslist under volunteers and "help wanted" where you explain what she needs and what you can afford to pay.

Go to your local chamber of commerce to ask if there is a senior care organization.  We have several in our area either for a small fee or totally volunteer.

there are many services available.  start with the phone book and social service office of the aging.
