Noise when steering?

I have a 1999 Mercury Sable.

When I turn left or right I hear a knocking noise and can feel a pulsating sensation in the steering wheel and in the pedals themselves. The noise isn't a grinding noise and it isn't quite a knock, but a knock is the closest thing I can think of to describe it.

The power steering pump and the rack have seen better days, allegedly due to my dip s**t ex mechanic (supposedly they left an air bubble in the steering system when the flushed it...my next mechanic flushed the system again, but the damage was already done i was told).

I haven't put it on jack stands to take a look yet, but I wanted to see if anyone had any ideas of what it might be so I can at least get an idea of what I might be looking for.

Thanks.

Anyone have an idea how much to replace the Rack, pump, and flush the system would be to have a mechanic do the work? Thanks for the input thus far

just from what you described here to us about it id say your looking at a new rack and pinion unit in it,the knocking sound can be caused by the rack unit its self, its best if you do replace that one to replace the pump with it and flush all the lines out again so n junk from the lines get in the new unit, that should cure your problems with it,i have replaced a few on those cars and it isn't a bad job once you get it up in the air and the wheels off, take your time with it though ,and don't get in a hurry,i had a customer the other day that replaced his on a Chevy and left a line loose and it caused the new rack to go out on it again, and they wont warranty them for that ,good luck with it.

Yeah I would say CV Joint(s). On a front wheel drive you have independent axles. One for the left wheel, and one for the right. It may be just one but it might be smart to change both while your at it if you can fit that in your budget. For someone mechanically inclined it's not to bad of a task, but it does consist of torquing and you need a torque wrench for that. But from what you explained, I would bet that this is your problem. Good luck.

It sounds like the ball joint suspensions are worn.
